What happens to us in that understanding that seizes us when we see the Portret van Joseph Roulin of Van Gogh?. We get insight about the being of Joseph Roulin that we could not achie- ve in a purely objective way. When we face this picture we can grasp something fundamental that captures us (such a cacophony is necessary): a cognitive value that answers the question of ‘Who is Joseph Roulin?’. This work aims to inter- pret this understanding (hermeneutical circle) contrasting a modern observation and a herme- neutical reading.
